CNC TURNING at GBS Machining Services

CNC Turning is a machining process in which a non-rotating cutting tool moves linearly as the workpiece rotates and produces a perfect cut in a cylindrical shape. Because the workpiece rotates at a high speed, the cutting tool only needs to move straight on the X and Z axis.

Our CNC machines are fully computer controlled and have the ability to move the head along the X and Z axis. This makes it possible to make grooves in metal blocks or cone-shaped workpieces, for example. Thanks to our wide range of milling tools, milling accuracy and efficiency is much higher compared to alternative milling machines.

CNC lathes are able to create complex operations from a single workpiece thanks to the fully automatic process. Turning in multiple directions (back and forth) must be carried out with specially developed tools, with which complex profiles and grooves can be executed in different types of metal. Multi-directional tools can use axial as well as rotary movements. Although more knowledge is needed, the use of multi-directional tools can arguably speed up the process.

Normal tools have difficulty absorbing the forces of axial turning. By using special indexable inserts, the deflexion that occurs during longitudinal rotation is corrected. The indexable inserts are in the loaded position (when rotated) in the correct position, resulting in a freewheel. This deflection must be corrected, otherwise there will be deviations in the product diameters. Sometimes it is more interesting, and depending on the availability of the machines, to process the product on both a turning and a milling machine in order to shorten the delivery time.

LATHE CAPABILITIES

Turning is especially interesting when longer and larger cylindrical workpieces are to be machined. Turning machines are faster compared to milling machines and offer the same quality and precision. The great advantage of CNC turning is that roundings, cones and notches can be easily applied to the workpiece.

Some examples of products that can be ideally processed by turning machines are cylinders, piston rods, propeller shafts, control tubes, milling shafts and rollers. Contact us for more information and to hear what GBS Machining Services can do for you!

DIMENSIONS

Our turning machines are suitable for metal workpieces with a maximum cutting diameter of 648 mm and a cutting length of up to 1118 mm. This gives GBS Machining Services the ability to turn even the largest workpieces with the highest precision. When turning is not an option, milling can create extremely complex metal products. Our 80P duoblock milling machine can mill products up to 1250mm in length, making the largest products with the highest precision. Our new 60P duo block can mill products up to 900 mm and is equipped with a large number of different tools.

For more complex projects, workpieces can first be processed on our turning machines and further processed in our milling machines. For example, when curved lines are required, our 5-axis simultaneous milling machine can create the required slopes and angles.

A term that you often hear in the plastics processing industry is "CNC machining". CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control. In short, it is a way of processing high-quality plastics very accurately into an end product. At GBS Machining Services we specialize in this. People and machines work together with us to deliver top quality milling and turning work. In this article we explain what CNC machining exactly entails and which techniques and machines are involved.

CNC machining: more than accurate

Machining is the processing of material with hand or machine tools, whereby parts of the material are removed. These removed parts are called chips. Consider, for example, milling, drilling, sawing or sanding. Machining can take place in wood, metal and plastic processing. In the high-quality plastics industry, this machining is of course not done by hand, but with computer-controlled turning and milling machines that are very accurate. At BKB we can do that up to 3μm. That is also where the term CNC machining comes from. This means that on the basis of the supplied specifications, the machines can process the plastic with great accuracy in such a way that exactly the right shape and size is obtained. Working with such CNC turning and milling machines requires the right expertise and professional knowledge. Knowledge that we have plenty of in-house at GBS Machining Services.

What is CNC? Machining techniques explained

The plastics processing industry mainly uses turning and milling machining techniques. These are comparable techniques that both yield a different end result. Which technique is most suitable therefore depends on the desired product. CNC milling is a machining operation that is performed with a rotating tool: the mill. The plastic is clamped in a milling machine and processed with a computer-controlled, multi-axis milling machine. Usually it concerns round sheet material that can be processed. This allows the plastic to be processed simultaneously on several sides. In addition, it is also possible to use a CNC lathe, where the material rotates, also called CNC turning. CNC milling and turning are suitable for manufacturing complex plastic parts for various high-tech industries such as mechanical engineering, defense, and the medical industry.

The different CNC machines: CNC turning and milling

Various state-of-the-art machines are available on the market for these plastic processes. Many of these machines can also be combined with robot loading. We highlight a number of types of milling and turning machines:

3 and 4 axis CNC milling machines

The most common, simple operations can be done with a 3- or 4-axis milling machine. These machines have 3 or 4 axes with which different shapes, holes or contours can be made in the plastic product.

5-axis simultaneous milling with a CNC milling machine

A 5-axis milling machine can be used for more complex products. With this plastic processing, the product can be processed on multiple sides. In combination with robot loading, this ensures a very accurate and efficient way of processing.

CNC portal milling machines

Portal milling machines are particularly suitable for large format plastic sheets. These imposing CNC portal milling machines can work flatly up to 0.02 millimeters over a length of more than 6 meters.

Turning plastic with a CNC turning machine

A lathe is ideal for cylindrical machining. Different plastic materials and shapes can be processed in this way, whereby an extremely accurate and smooth finish is achieved.

Turn-mill combinations

In some cases a combination of turning and milling is required. Then the turn-mill combination offers

outcome. Plastic components can be turned and milled with the most precise accuracy on these CNC turn-milling machines.

Are you curious about what we can do for you in the field of CNC plastic processing or would you like more information about plastic processing or about our machinery? Please do not hesitate to contact us. We are happy to tell you all about it.

What is CNC turning and how are CNC lathes used?

Of course there will be many residents of the Netherlands who have never heard of CNC turning and CNC milling, let alone that special machines are also used for this. As a result, they do not know what the differences are between these two techniques. This article will explain exactly how CNC turning works, while also looking at how the lathes work.

By the way, these two methods will differ in particular in editing the created results. In addition, there is also a considerable difference between the products that the two different machines can make. If your concept cannot be created with CNC turning or CNC milling, you could in principle still use 3d printing.

What is CNC turning? A machining technique, that is what CNC turning is. This can be used in a number of different ways. CNC turning can be done in a manual way, so you do it by hand. In addition, you can certainly choose to run it computer-controlled. A special lathe will be used for this. Such lathes can be used in two ways, namely both horizontally and vertically. So these are two different directions. Which direction is best for your product basically depends on two things: the weight and the tolerance of the item to be produced. A lathe will of course turn the product, but you probably already figured that out. Round materials are often used in this process, but square is also possible for CNC turning.

The present and the past of CNC lathes The first lathes ever developed in the distant past had to be controlled manually, so by hand. Nowadays this is of course no longer the case. In the past, these special benches turned by means of a number of turning wheels in the machine. At the time, a specialist had to operate the CNC lathe at the time. The material was held, while the chuck had to be moved at the same time with the help of the turning wheels. This drill head then saw objects and models from the material underneath. In principle, this is now as good as the same, but it is of course a lot more modern. Nowadays, of course, a computer is used to control this process. This is the case with CNC turning, but also with CNC milling. This ensures that the producer no longer has to keep an eye on the machine. In addition, it is of course also much simpler and faster than by hand.

How are CNC lathes used? In general, the CNC turning machines are mostly used for making round or tube forming product. Nevertheless, this is not always the case. In principle, a model that has a different shape could also be produced using this machining technique. This is done with such a special turning device. There is a so-called chuck on a CNC machine. This specific part will be used to hold the material used to create the product in place. In principle, the task of a chuck can also be performed by, for example, a collet, but that is often not the case. The CNC lathe will then turn at various speeds. This depends very much on the capacity of the device. The diameter of the concept and the material will also play a role in this. Of course, the tool of the machine, which is actually the chuck, will move in the rotating material. This cuts off pieces and creates an object.

About turning

Turning is a machining technique in which a workpiece is placed on the lathe. The workpiece is held in place by a chuck. Depending on the machine and the workpiece, the chuck rotates at different speeds (RPMs). By means of tools such as chisels and cutters, material is turned away from the workpiece in order to process it to the correct specifications.
